"Where will the car go? "

I'm almost never impressed by the "new" cars that run in the city. The same is true for many things that are considered "new." The "new products" that are announced one after another quickly become old and are thrown away without reaching the depths of the human heart.

There is a word "my car". Of all the things that people produce, cars are probably the only products with the word "love." I am proud to be a car designer. A car is not just a tool, it can be a big part of your life. My memory is full of beautiful memories brought by such a car. Cars have the power to connect people to people, people to towns, people to society, and people to dreams. Why do old cars feel pure? A modern car that is equipped with all kinds of technologies and continues to evolve. However, the more we evolve, the more "something" is lost.

It is "romance".

A car needs romance. Isn't it sad to choose a car that is spacious and can accommodate a large number of people, that children's luggage is easy to load, and that only convenience is required? A car that will be your companion and will run with you both when it's fun and when it's difficult. It brings a breath of life to an irreplaceable life. An irreplaceable one-time life. Let's make a wonderful time. Let's get in a car with romance.

The era when people's lives are dominated by things is coming to an end. It's also the end of a design that focuses solely on the one-way “new”. From now on, the era of "sense" of people and life. The time has come when "new" is not good, but the power to connect the past, the present, and the future is important. We will tell you how to see, feel, and think about your life through the car. "Cars can make your life and the city beautiful. I hope "W-SENSE" will be an opportunity to make your daily life as happy as possible.

001-Jaguar-XKSS(1957)
It was produced as a road-going version for general roads based on the short nose version of the racing car D type manufactured from 1954. Due to the fire at the Brownsrain factory on the night of February 12, 1957, both inventory and jigs were burned down, and production was forced to be discontinued, so only 16 units were produced (in addition, two conversions from the D type were produced. It's just a). For this reason, it is now known as the rarest and most valuable car in the Classic Jaguar. Compact and primitive. The car-like form of the human body is as if the pure soul of the creator had been transferred. (Some information according to Wikipedia)

002-Jaguar XKSS(1957) + Steve Mcqueen
Something tremendous mood is transmitted. A scene in which the driver's sense and the car's sense are perfectly harmonized. Longing for.

036-Jaguar XKSS(1957)
It's a very artistic sound machine.

003-Jaguar E-type Lightweight(1962)
A special E type made when I was just born. In 1962, when the Ferrari 250 GTO entered the race, the privateer E-Type lost its advantage due to its high power performance. Jaguar urgently needed a car that surpassed Ferrari and created a special version. It is an E-Type Lightweight with the body panel made entirely of aluminum and the engine and suspension tuned. The XK 3.8-liter engine with Lucas injection produced over 300bhp. A total of 12 lightweights were made and participated in the race.
Although this E type has been maximized to the limit, the connection between the body and the cabin feels more natural than the usual one. The body composition, which has a clear purpose like a race car, is minimal and beautiful. I feel a tremendous sense.

004-Jaguar E-type Lightweight Interior design (1962)
An indescribable atmosphere. I think design requires a lot of time.

005-Jaguar E-type(1962)+Steve Mcqueen
As a result, sense is a person. Let's polish ourselves more than we polish our cars!

006-Jaguar XKSS+Steve Mcqueen(1957)
It's like giving the city a breath of culture. A beautiful car raises the cultural level of the city, society, and country. On the contrary, the ugly car will be lowered. If it sells, everything is over. Car designer, let's design with your heart. By the way, the driver is Steve Mcqueen.

Design requires romance. In other words, society and life need emotions.

007-Jaguar E-type(1961)
I feel this face, the mysterious power of the creator. If you are interested in the shape of the lamp or grill, this power as a solid is not created.

008-Jaguar XKD(1954)

009-Jaguar XKD Longnose(1954)
It is a four-sided view of XKD. The feature is that the intonation seen in the side view is not seen in the plan view seen from above. The shape of the race car retains the technology of that era. It does not create a cool shape, but expresses the ultimate rationality of the times. The plan view, which is narrowed down from the front to the rear, is an indication of aerodynamic characteristics. The story changes, but the number of designers who can draw four views has decreased. Jujiaro once told me that four views are the life of car design. The Audi A5 was built on that principle.

010-Jaguar XKD Longnose(1954)
FIG. 2 is a four-view view of XKD. The change in the steps of each body section is interesting. In the old days, all the aluminum bodies were made by hand based on the drawings. It is a craftsmanship. The craftsmen disappeared in the rationality of computers and companies in this era.

011-Jaguar E-Type Speedstar(1961)
Jaguar E-type open type. It's too cool. This impression is inherited by the recently released Jaguar F-type.

012-Jaguar E-Type(1961)
This car was actually born in the year I was born. The point is that by the time we were born, the best was already produced.

013-Aston Martin Rapide(2010)
Aston Design clearly carries on the wonderful British DNA of the past. It is new and old, and it conveys the attitude of trying to create "beautiful" things. And I am impressed with the concept. While feeling the collapse of Italian design, it is one of the only beautiful brands in the world that has inherited the European tradition. Rapid achieved great proportions while having four doors. It can be said that it is a wonderful masterpiece of modern 4-door cars. Marek Reichman (Aston Martin Design Director), who oversaw the design, has been a good friend since he was a student at RCA.

014-TOYOTA 2000GT(1967)
The 2000GT was jointly developed by Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., and was outsourced to Yamaha for limited production under the Toyota brand from 1967 to 1970. It is a photograph that leaves a sense of presence even if it decays. Mr. Toyoda, could you please bring me back like Space Battleship Yamato?

015-TOYOTA 2000GT(1969)
This is the car that I pay the most respect to in TOYOTA. It is said to be strongly influenced by Jaguar E-type, but even so, it is a wonderful masterpiece. In particular, the grill and lamp processing seen on the front has a strong personality. The fusion of the cabin and the body also feels the sense of the creator. It is definitely a property of Japanese car design.

016-Ferrari Daytona 365GTB/4 (1968)
There is a car that once thrilled as a child. It's Ferrari Daytona and Jaguar Etype. These two cars that I often encountered in Motomachi, Yokohama became the silhouette of my car's heart. Beauty that can be passed down to children. Daytona made her debut at the 1968 Paris Auto Show. The nickname "Daytona" is said to have come spontaneously after Ferrari's sports prototype boasted overwhelming strength in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona and achieved a 1-2-3 finish. Styling by Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, who has the dynamic newness of the 1970s but does not collapse. Since then, the beauty of this car has influenced the design of many cars.

017-Now the problem. What is this car?
Minimalistic and lean instruments. It has a persuasive and superlative sense that cannot be said to be old. I don't deny digital, but I don't have enough sense of the creator. I want to learn a better sense of ancestors. Porsche 356 Speedstar (1953)

018-Porsche 356 Speedstar(1968)
Whenever I go to California, I have a car that I always want. Porsche 356 Speedstar. The reflection reflected on the body reflects the beauty that cannot be imagined in this world. This car is like a magic mirror that beautifully reflects the world. The Fiat 550, Cinquicento, visible over there, is accompanied by flowers. I feel happy.

019-Porsche 356C(1963)
Now sports cars are wearing huge tires to the full width of the body. Sports cars of this era are humble and fashionable. Something very charming.

020-Porsche 356/2(1948)
The second prototype car was manufactured as a closed-body coupe and had a rear engine layout. It was completed in July 1948. Later, there were two types of car bodies, a coupe and a cabriolet, two auxiliary seats were added to the rear, and the front was a central two-split window. The chassis is also a steel plate press similar to the beetle, and a platform that has just been welded. It's quite handmade, but it has a taste. It's vintage wine itself.

021-Porsche 356/2(1948)
Very charming plan view. It is the skill of a professional designer to clearly show the individuality of the car in the top view. Young car designers, aren't you just drawing side views?

022-Porsche 356/2(1948)
Porsche is a German soul-like brand. The car that represents the country shows its spirit and pride. That's what every German knows.

023-Porsche 928S4(1987)
It was my hero car when I started my career as a car designer. Originally announced in 1981, the 928S4 is a model that received a facelift in 1987. If you were asked to give the car with the highest impact in the last 40 years, I would give you the 928 and TT. It is still one of the cars I want to drive.

024-Porsche 928S4(1987)
The design contrast with the 911 is exceptional. In that sense, I think Porsche is great.

025-Porsche 993(1993)
The Porsche 993 is the 911 that I pay the most respect to. The compact, powerful and gentle body design is a representative design of modern sports cars. I think the beauty of German design is that it has some humble beauty without the arrogance that sports cars tend to have. All designs show the ideas of the creator. This is why I pay homage to this car.

026-Porsche 993(1993)
The 911 is always a new 911, even though it is always a 911. It's not something that should be changed. The indomitable strength is in 911. That's why I think everyone is attracted.

The strength that keeps changing because it doesn't change

It does not deny the Japanese aesthetic sense of lightness, but even considering the basics of a car that carries people and runs on the ground, I think that the sense of strength and weight that saves lives is an element that must never be forgotten. .. The car must not go against gravity.
Not only Japanese cars, but also changes in the car design process may be the cause of the increase in "two-dimensional" cars. A feeling of weight that fades in the virtual space of 3D modeling by computer. Use your limbs to create the body of the car with your whole body, and value the "weight" created there. I want to convey this to the next generation of car designers.

027-Porsche 996(1993)
The Japanese tend to misunderstand the word classic. This car is undoubtedly "Classic". It refers to the superlative splendor that transcends time and space. It is deeper than "new".

The words of the genius Giugiaro

A talk show at the new golf recital that I was the facilitator.
Maestro Giugiaro said.
"There are many traditionally beautiful things in Japan. Fashion, architecture, culture, lifestyle, these are welcomed from Europe with a longing. That's why Japanese Mr. Wada asked me what beauty is. It's confusing when asked. You may not understand it because the concept of beauty comes from the outside. I think beauty is in you. "
A gentle word that suggests the potential of beauty and the role of Japanese design while knowing the actual situation of Japanese car design. That was exactly the maximum word I had been waiting for.

A book I accidentally picked up when I started attending art school and didn't even understand the letter "D" in design. It was a design magazine called "Car Styling" and was a special issue of Giorgetto Giugiaro. The existence of a maestro who led me to the path of a car designer.
After that, I will meet Walter de Silva in Audi. His boss, sometimes a competitor, and sometimes like his father. He was also a comrade who co-created many cars such as the show car Pikes Peak Quattro, Q7, A5, etc., starting from A6 wearing a single frame.

029-VW GOLF (1967-)
It's an old story, but when I was in college, I was riding the first GOLF while sharing it with my brother. The color was white on the face lift (minor change model) of the model by that genius Giugiaro. It's square, round, taut, and has a touch of sex appeal. I still remember that I was slamming intelligence. It broke well, but it was a memorable car.
The GOLF is the successor to the Beetle, which was a Volkswagen (national car) in Germany, and was designed by Giugiaro. The first GOLF, announced in 1974, produced 6.8 million units and can be said to have set the standard for modern cars. In particular, GTI has spread its fans all over the world as a DOHC hot model. And this year, the 7th generation GOLF will be announced and will be introduced in Japan next year.
GOLF's name value in Japan is probably higher than VW, and it is a car like no other imported car that has been loved by people who love functional design for many years. It is simple yet has a strong presence, and it may be common to Porsche 911 in the sense that it is a design like Germany itself.
The idea of design that eliminates unnecessary styling and visualizes functions is the heart of Bauhaus, which is the origin of German design, and it will be strengthened by being carefully inherited. It is the opposite consciousness to the modern car that repeats skin changes without soul.
Let's stop the era of seeking strange superficial changes. Let's inherit the important things in people's consciousness and heart. Be careful not to overdo it. GOLF feels like it's been appealing to us all the time.
Why Volkswagen now?
"It's an era when life needs real simplicity." (Excerpt from SWdesign | Minimal x Future | Design Memories 038)

030-GOLF MK1(1974)

031-GOLF GTI (1975)

032-Fiat Panda Off Roader Concept (1980)
The Fiat Panda Off Roader Concept was unveiled at the 1980 Turin Motor Show as an Italdesign concept car led by Giugiaro. The idea source, which is a little different from the interior of the production version Fiat Pand 4X4, has been taken over brilliantly. Feel the unrestrained interior design.

033-Fiat Panda Concept (1980)
I joined the Nissan Design Department and bought the Fiat Panda 4X4 with my first salary as a down payment. I learned a lot of my life from this car. "Good design makes people happy"

034-Fiat Panda Off Roader Concept (1980)
The Panda Off Roader Concept unveiled at the 1980 Turin Motor Show. Later, it was released by Fiat as Panda 4X4.

Good design makes people happy

"We are egoists. We always have the desire to make something different from people. But even if we make something that has a big visible change or impact, it won't last long. Design It doesn't make sense if you don't love it carefully. "
The attitude of the genius, and the words, have always been very humble. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be there now. Thank you, Maestro Giugiaro.

035-Fiat Panda(1980)
The car I joined Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and purchased for the first time with a down payment was FIAT Panda 4x4. It's been over 25 years ago. It was a moment when I got a small dream. Purchased at Jacks, which was along Ring 8 (where the current Audi dealer is) at that time. It was one of the first 25 cars imported into Japan. The color is moss green. It is a masterpiece of the genius Giorgetto Giugiaro in the heyday of Italdesign with a double sunroof 4WD specification.
Without that Giorgetto Giugiaro, I wouldn't have been a car designer in the first place. My first encounter was when I was still a college student, and the moment I opened the page of the car styling separate volume (35 ½ special feature Giugiaro & Italdesign) that happened to be in the laboratory, my life changed.
"Panda" is round.
The FIAT panda using flat glass is a car that looks like Olivetti's product design. Beautiful box design. Why is a mere box so beautiful? That was the highlight of Giugiaro's arm. While using flat glass, he skillfully manipulated the plan view (the lines that make up the body when viewed from above), and the surface of the thick C-pillar was composed of a beautiful surface that looked like a part of a very taut sphere. The design that looks like a box is his magic that it's not really a box.
"Super cool! 』
There was no reason there. It was an immature designer's egg, but I was able to grasp what its potential was. It was the moment I wanted to be a car designer.
The FIAT Panda became a national car in Italy and Europe in the early 1980s. A car that anyone can buy and use. The "small giant" is by no means a luxury car, but it is a sincere, extremely high-level, proper design that will never get tired of. And I think it was a "beautiful" car. I was impressed by the attitude of the panda.
I believe in the power of design. I want to convey the excitement of that day to the next generation in a new language. I think that is my mission.

"We are egoists. We always have the desire to make something different from people."
However, even if you make something that has a big visible change or impact, it will not last long.
Design is meaningless unless it is loved carefully. "
(By G. Giugiaro)

Next time, I would like to introduce more of my favorite Maestro works. looking forward to.
